Timor-Leste and Brunei Darussalam to deepen ‘energy cooperation’

DILI, 18 september 2024 (TATOLI) – Today, the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Agio Pereira, met with the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Timor-Leste, Wan Hadfi Latif, to discuss cooperation between the two countries, with a special focus on the development of the oil and gas sector.

During the meeting, Ambassador Latif briefed Minister Pereira about Brunei’s rapid growth in the oil and gas sector over the last decade.

Brunei’s rapid development in the oil and gas sector was highlighted as a possible source of inspiration for Timor-Leste, which is at a crucial stage of negotiations on the Greater Sunrise project.

Minister Pereira stressed that “Brunei’s experience is a valuable example for East Timor, as the country is entering a very important phase in the development of its energy resources.”

Minister Pereira is scheduled to travel to Brunei Darussalam, one of the ASEAN countries rich in oil and gas, where he will discuss the development of the energy sector with his Bruneian counterpart, Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah. 

He will also meet with the Minister of Finance and Economy II, Amin Liew bin Abdullah, to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Minister Pereira will also visit the Hengyi PMB refinery and petrochemical project, which involves the development of an integrated refinery and petrochemical complex at Pulau Muara Besar in Brunei.
