Timor-Leste and Lao DPR sign Visa Free Agreement for Diplomatic Service Passport

DILI, 09 october 2024 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste and Lao People’s Democratic Republic (LPDR), have signed a visa-free agreement for holders of official and diplomatic passports between Timor-Leste and Lao DPR.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, and his Laotian Counterpart, Saleumxay Kommasith and was witnessed by the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, and his Laotian Counterpart, Sonexay Siphandone.

Both ministers also signed a long-term agreement on the diplomatic exchange of land and property between the Government of Timor-Leste and Lao DPR. Under this agreement, the Lao DPR will acquire land to establish its embassy in Dili. Meanwhile, the Government of Timor-Leste will also establish its Embassy in Vientiane.

The application of visa exemption for diplomatic passport and service passport holders is very important, as it can better facilitate the movement between Timor-Leste and Lao DPR diplomatic officials, in order to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the future.

Prime Minister Gusmão said that this agreement will further strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between both nations in the future.

Gusmõa also expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Lao DPRK’s full support for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
