President Horta challenges Timorese youth to lead nation’s transformation

DILI, 12 november 2024 (TATOLI) – In an address marking National Youth Day and the 33rd anniversary of the Santa Cruz Massacre, the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta called on Timor-Leste’s young people to spearhead efforts to address climate change and prepare for ASEAN integration.

Paying tribute to the youth who sacrificed their lives for Timorese independence, the Horta urged today’s generation to pursue studies in environmental science and sustainable water management.

“Our resilience to climate change depends on your ability to manage our resources intelligently,” he told the nation’s youth.

The Head of State also stressed the need for young Timorese to develop professional skills to thrive in the regional ASEAN market, which offers vast economic opportunities.

“This is a pivotal moment that requires a youth well-prepared for the challenges and possibilities ahead,” said President Horta.

Concluding his speech, the President praised young Timorese emigrants for supporting their families and enhancing the country’s reputation abroad. He challenged the nation’s youth to draw inspiration from past heroes and become “agents of change” leading Timor-Leste towards a sustainable future.
