DILI, 04 december 2024 (TATOLI) – Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has officially announced that two of Malaysia’s low-cost airlines “Air Asia” and “Batik Air” will launch flights to Timor-Leste in early 2025.

Prime Minister Ibrahim made the statement at the joint conference during Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão’s official visit to Malaysia.

Ibrahim said that his government has welcomed the support to approve direct flights of Air Asia and Batik Air to Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste.

“Batik Air will be flying soon early next year to Dili, Timor-Leste, and Air Asia will follow up soon afterwards,” said Prime Minister Ibrahim during the joint conference, in Kuala Lumpur, on monday.

On june 2024, Timor-Leste’s Foreign Minister, Bendito Freitas, and Malaysian Transport Minister, Anthony Loke signed an Air Service Agreement, which would pave the way for Malaysian airlines to fly to Dili.

This agreement aimed to enhance cooperation in air services and boost people-to-people connectivity.

Batik Air is a rapidly expanding Malaysian-based airline with its main hubs at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, KLIA Main Terminal and Subang Skypark, the convenient KL downtown city airport in Selangor, Malaysia.

In addition to air transport cooperation, the Malaysian Head of Government also expressed his commitment to expanding cooperation with Timor-Leste in all sectors, including infrastructure, services, agro industry, livestock, poultry, defense and security, TVET, and higher education.

The Prime Minister once again reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to fully support Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN next year.
