BOBONARO, 10 january 2025 (TATOLI) – On thursday, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão laid the foundation stone of the Maliana II irrigation scheme project worth over US$9 million.

The project will irrigate over 1,400 hectares of agricultural land in Tapo-Memo village, Maliana Administrative Post, Bobonaro Municipality.

The project is part of the government’s commitment to food security, which involves strengthening national rice production.

In addition to local food production, the irrigation project will also support livestock and fish farming in local communities.

Prime Minister Gusmão urged local farmers to use their abandoned farmland to increase local food production, especially rice.

The President of the Bobonaro Municipal Authority, Alexandrino Pires, thanked the government for taking the initiative to rebuild the Maliana II Irrigation Scheme.

He said that many farmers had previously experienced a significant decrease in local food production due to a lack of water supply: “With this construction project, food production in Maliana will certainly be improved and increased.”
