UK Minister for Indo-Pacific Catherine West visits Dili

DILI, 22 january 2025 (TATOLI) – UK Minister of State for Indo-Pacific Catherine West will visit Dili on 23-24 january 2025 to reiterate the UK’s commitment to support Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN, as well as to reaffirm support through the UK’s development programming.

Minister West will meet with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and other senior figures to discuss key issues relating to UK-TL bilateral relations.

West will also attend the “Women in Diplomacy” event hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste and the UN Women. 

UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West said: “This is my first visit as Minister for the Indo-Pacific to Timor-Leste, a nation rich in culture, history and potential.”

“The country’s commitment to sustainable development and its active participation in regional and global fora signal its ambition to play a key role on the international stage. The UK remains committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN as it continues to grow its economic potential,” Minister West said in a statement.

“I look forward to meeting the Prime Minister and our Timorese partners and international interlocutors to discuss ways in which the UK and Timor-Leste can foster our partnership for our mutual growth,” Minister West said in a statement.

Meanwhile, UK Ambassador to Timor-Leste Dominic Jermey said: “Our countries have long been friends, and the UK has become home to the largest Timorese overseas diaspora. We want to see Timor-Leste continue developing as a stable and prosperous nation, and we will continue to support Timor-Leste’s progress in meeting the roadmap for its full membership of ASEAN. Obrigado!”

Minister West and Prime Minister Gusmão will deliver press statement following their meeting on thursday 23 january at 15.30.
