DILI, 28 March 2025 (TATOLI) -Timor-Leste’s ambassador to Indonesia, Roberto Soares, met on Thursday in Jakarta with his Polish counterpart, Barbara Szymanowska, to discuss the possibility of exploring new opportunities for bilateral cooperation and strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.
According to sources at the Embassy of Timor-Leste in Indonesia, the two also exchanged views on the regional and international security situation and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting and respecting the principles of international law, independence, and sovereignty.
Soares thanked his counterpart for her visit and recalled the historic visit of Pope John Paul II, who was also of Polish nationality, to Timor-Leste in 1989, noting that his presence contributed immensely to Timor-Leste’s liberation struggle.
To mark the occasion, the Government of Timor-Leste built a monument in Tasi Tolu: a statue of Pope John Paul II, in honor and memory of his visit to Timor-Leste.
