DILI, 15 April 2025 (TATOLI) – Authorities have seized 420 cartons of illegal cigarettes in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste.
The Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Timorese National Police (PNTL), Superintendent, João Belo dos Reis, said that the illegal cigarettes, which are believed to have been transported from Cambodia, were seized on Friday (11/04).
Authorities said that the collaboration between police and the Timor-Leste Customs Authority was crucial in the discovery of 420 cartons of cigarettes.
Reis explained that the police were contacted by the Customs Authority to report 20 suspicious containers, which were supposed to contain tissue, as stated in the shipping documents, but they turned out to contain illegal cigarettes.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the import of the 20 containers containing the cigarettes.
Earlier this month, PNTL, in close collaboration with the Customs Authorities, also seized 2.94 kg of cocaine smuggled into the country by a foreign national.
