DILI, 23 April 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, met on Tuesday with his Bulgarian counterpart, Rumen Georgiev Radev, to discuss the establishment of bilateral cooperation in key areas, including healthcare, agriculture, and technology.
The bilateral discussion focused on three key areas of cooperation: “Education, particularly sending Timorese medical students to study in Bulgaria; agricultural development with emphasis on food security, leveraging Bulgaria’s modern farming practices; and defense collaboration through Bulgaria’s highly regarded Naval Academy.”
The Bulgarian President extended an invitation for young Timorese to pursue studies in Bulgaria’s advanced IT sector.
President Ramos-Horta emphasized that despite the geographical distance between the nations, this visit would strengthen cooperation for the mutual benefit of both countries.
Horta also shared perspectives on European Union dynamics and regional politics during the meetings and mentioned plans to discuss with Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister about sending a team to Bulgaria to explore these educational and training opportunities.
“This landmark diplomatic engagement opens new doors for Timor-Leste as the developing nation seeks to expand its international partnerships and build capacity in critical sectors including healthcare, agriculture, defense, and technology,” said in a statement.
It was President Horta’s first state visit to Bulgaria, following an invitation from President Radev.
Horta expressed his deep gratitude for the invitation and highlighted the significance of this first bilateral meeting between the two nations, despite their geographical distance.
Last week, the National Parliament approved President Horta’s state visit to Bulgaria.
