DILI, 07 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers has approved the new Statute of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL).
The Decree-Law on UNTL’s new statute was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Culture, José Honório da Costa Pereira Jerónimo, and the Rector of UNTL, João Soares Martins.
The decree seeks to formulate UNTL’s statute by restructuring its organization and management to align with the current demands of higher education.
The goal is to streamline the university’s structure to better meet current needs and reinforce its mission to generate, share, and apply knowledge in support of national development.
“The new statute introduces significant changes to UNTL’s internal structure, including the creation of new bodies and the redefinition of the responsibilities of some existing bodies,” read a release.
These changes are intended to optimize the university’s management, promote greater interdisciplinary in teaching and research, and ensure better use of resources.
UNTL was founded in 2000, two years before the restoration of independence of the country. It is the only public university in Timor-Leste and is considered the country’s oldest and largest university in terms of student population, faculty, and budget.
