DILI, 13 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Institute of Pharmacy and Medical Products (IFPM-Tetun), in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will purchase vaccines against rotavirus, tetanus, and diphtheria.

The Head of INFPM’s Quality Control Department, Miguel Soares, said that INFPM has made US$107,000 available for the purchase of the vaccines.

The procurement of the vaccines is part of the Government’s efforts to protect Timorese children from rotavirus, tetanus, and diphtheria, which are crucial for preventing serious illness and even death in infants.

WHO recommends vaccines against rotavirus, tetanus, diphtheria, and other diseases, as they are crucial for protecting individuals—particularly infants and young children—from serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines help prevent more than 30 life-threatening diseases and infections, enabling people of all ages to live longer, healthier lives. Immunization currently prevents between 3.5 million and 5 million deaths each year from diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza, and measles.
