DILI, 26 May 2025 (TATOLI) – More than 100 school inspectors from all levels of education are currently participating in the Literacy and Numeracy Training Program. The program is being held at the Ian Martin Hall, located within the National Institute for the Training of Teachers and Education Professionals (INFORDEPE) in Dili, and will run until the 28th of this month.

The initiative is organized by the Office of the Inspector General under the Ministry of Education (ME).

Education Minister Dulce de Jesus underscored the importance of equipping school inspectors with strong knowledge and skills in literacy and numeracy, stressing that their role is vital to ensuring effective oversight and ensuring the quality and standards of education within the national system.

Soares further emphasized that inspectors must have a solid understanding of the curriculum, including basic literacy instruction, to carry out their duties effectively in schools.

Meanwhile, Inspector General Maria Gusmão highlighted the need to strengthen inspectors’ understanding of literacy and numeracy.

She said inspectors play a key role in ensuring that teaching methods used in classrooms effectively support children’s cognitive development. “Basic literacy must be reinforced, and inspectors need to assess whether the pedagogical approaches used by teachers are effectively contributing to students’ learning,” Gusmão said.
