DILI, 13 June 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic José Ramos Horta held a meeting on Thursday with the Secretary of State for Equality (SEI), Elvira Sousa Carvalho
During the meeting, the Secretary of State invited the Head of State to deliver the keynote message at a side event of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, which will take place in New York.
Scheduled for July 14, the event will highlight “Timor-Leste’s model for coordinated prevention and response to gender-based violence,” directly contributing to the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, Gender Equality.
The theme of the HLPF is “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind”.
The 2025 HLPF is expected to bring together ministerial and high-level representatives of governments, as well as a wide range of expertise and stakeholders, including heads of UN entities, academics and other experts, and representatives of major groups and other stakeholders.
The meeting also addressed other SEI initiatives, including efforts to prevent sexual harassment in workplaces, educational institutions and public services, as well as the continued development of legislation aimed at protecting domestic workers.
President Horta reaffirmed his strong commitment to these fundamental initiatives, emphasizing the importance of promoting equality and protecting the rights of all citizens throughout the territory.
