China Reaffirms Military Commitment to Peace, Strengthens Defense Ties with Timor-Leste

DILI, 25 July 2025 (TATOLI) – Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace and strengthened defense ties with Timor-Leste during a ceremony marking the 98th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Wang said the PLA, founded in 1927, has developed into a modern force focused on safeguarding China’s sovereignty and security, guided by President Xi Jinping’s vision of building a world-class military rooted in a defensive policy.
She underscored China’s active role in global peacekeeping, with over 1,800 troops currently deployed in UN missions and nearly 50,000 deployed since 1990.
The ambassador praised Timor-Leste’s support for peacekeeping and recognized the F-FDTL’s contributions as part of the global effort to maintain peace.
She also marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II by honoring the sacrifices made by both Chinese and Timorese during the global anti-fascist struggle.
Amid increasing global tensions, Wang called for nations to uphold peace, mutual benefit, and cooperation in resolving international disputes.
She said the recent visits by President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão to China have strengthened bilateral relations and paved the way for expanded military cooperation in areas such as training, equipment support, and professional exchanges.
Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Timor-Leste to address global security challenges and promote a shared future for humanity.
Timor-Leste’s Minister of Defense, Donaciano Gomes “Pedro Klamar Fuik,” extended congratulations to China and expressed gratitude for the PLA’s continued support.
He reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with China, particularly in the defense sector, which he described as a vital instrument for peace, security, and national development.
Klamar Fuik noted that cooperation has included technical training, military hospital infrastructure, and substantial donations of equipment—key contributions to the operational capacity and autonomy of the F-FDTL.
He concluded by expressing confidence in the future of bilateral relations and reiterated Timor-Leste’s commitment to promoting lasting peace alongside China.
