DILI, 23 September 2025 (TATOLI) – President José Ramos-Horta said Malaysian investors are welcome to invest in Timor-Leste’s key sectors, including agribusiness, tourism, and renewable energy.
The President made the appeal on Tuesday during the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to Dili. He said both countries had agreed to deepen cooperation for the benefit of their peoples.
Ramos-Horta said Malaysia could also play an important role in expanding opportunities for Timorese youth through education and vocational training programs in Malaysia.
He stressed that improved connectivity between the two countries would boost travel and trade.
The President described his meeting with Anwar Ibrahim as “warm, constructive, and focused on the future.”
He emphasized that Malaysia’s partnership is invaluable as Timor-Leste prepares for its formal accession to ASEAN in October in Kuala Lumpur.
Ramos-Horta recalled Malaysia’s solidarity during Timor-Leste’s most difficult moments, noting that its consistent support remains unforgettable for the Timorese people.
As part of the visit, Anwar Ibrahim will deliver the 2025 Presidential Lecture Series IV on the theme “ASEAN and the Role of Timor-Leste.”
On Wednesday, Ramos-Horta will present the Grande Colar da Ordem de Timor-Leste, the nation’s highest honor, to the Malaysian Prime Minister. The award recognizes his personal advocacy for Timor-Leste and Malaysia’s pivotal role under his leadership in supporting the country’s development and ASEAN membership bid.
Ramos-Horta said Timor-Leste and Malaysia are “more than just neighbors” and reaffirmed his confidence that the visit would mark the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations.
