Timor-Leste needs to record ASEAN requirements in the economy sector

DILI, 10 december, 2020 (TATOLI) – The Executive Director for the Trade Invest, Arcanjo da Silva said that the recommendations from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will not hamper accession process of Timor-Leste to ASEAN.

Arcanjo said it is necessary to range some requirements as an ASEAN State, namely the policy and the legal framework in the economy sector.

Speaking to the Journalist at the Press Conference, Arcanjo said, the recommendation of ASEAN Economy Community (SEOM) member for Timor-Leste in accession to the ASEAN membership was to comply with some requirements in several sector of economy.

At this point he stressed that, Timor-Leste needs to be aware of other criteria within this sector such as technical, political and legal level.

“We cannot go with a strange policy, but always adapt to the policy of an association”, he said at the press conference after the three days of Timor-Leste-ASEAN interface, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office.

It is recalled that the meeting was organized by the Secretariat of the ASEAN (ASEC) in close coordination with the senior economic officials of ASEAN and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), at a meeting chaired by Vietnam.
