MARY MACKILLOP Today helps poor children through sustainable program

DILI, 07 july 2021 (TATOLI) – MARY MACKILLOP Today is existing in Timor-Leste with a vision to help deprived people though sustainable education and also provided humanitarian assistance for people, who are encountering difficulty in life situations. This semi profit non-government organization (NGO) has been established in Timor-Leste since 2002.

The MARY MACKILLOP Mission in Timor-Leste has offered humanitarian assistance for victims affected by conflict after Timor-Leste gained its independence in 1999. The contribution has been offered through the involvement of some Australian nun’s for developing Education Curriculum in 1999.

From 1999 to 2011 MARY MACKILLOP focused on the education sector and supported teachers through teachers training to enhance teacher capacity to teach students in rural areas.

“Due on war consequence happen in 1999 most of people lacked opportunity graduated from their study, with all limitation knowledge decided to help children in rural area on education teaching program,” MARY MACKILLOP country director, Alipio Baltazar told to TATOLI Agency, at Becora, 7 july this tuesday.

According to Him since 2012 MARY MACKILLOP is considered as an Agency of sustainability Development teacher, children and parents in rural areas have access to education.

Thus, MARY MACKILLOP Today provided five programs composed of Library mobile, parents training, Literacy Tetum for teachers, literacy health and subsistence program. The subsistence program has a sub program, women empowerment and agriculture sector focus on Vanilla products.

He added, the program implementation was carried out in Viqueque, Manufahi, Ermera, Liquica and Dili municipalities.

MARY MACKILLOP considers Kindergarten and Primary School is a foundation on building a child mentality with some knowledge to continue to university and achieve wellbeing in the future.

“Most of teachers are limitation of knowledge to teach student and MARY MACKILLOP on coordination with Minister of Education, Youth and Sport (MEYS) to provide teacher training,” said Baltazar

MARY MACKILLOP today in agreement with MEYS to provide 72 reference books to guide teachers in rural areas to teach students.

Health literacy is most important to help students fully understand how to live in hygienic situations and avoid disease.

It is recalled that 600 teachers benefited for Tetum literacy and 400 teachers benefited for health literacy. More than 4000 students became the beneficiary for the MARY MACKILLOP program.
