DILI, 22 september 2021 (TATOLI) – More than 270 Timorese Seasonal Workers had been registered under the protection visa, the Secretary of State for Professional Training and Employment, Alarico do Rosario said.

The 270 Timor Leste nationals are currently working in Australia under a protection visa.

SEFOPE said that “due to the impacts of the COVID-19 on seasonal workers, these Timorese seasonal workers have decided to leave their original contracts (Seasonal Workers Program) and apply for Temporary Protection Visas to continue working in Australia.”

He said efforts had been made by sending an attaché to discuss with the Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Australia and the Timorese Seasonal Workers.

“The attaché had communicated with the Timor-Leste’s Ambassador to Australia to convince the Timorese Seasonal Workers to return home,” Rosario said.

He said the problem has to be addressed soon, saying it might affect Timorese Seasonal Workers in the future.
