U.S Donates US$ 10,000 to PC to combat  disinformation

DILI, 04 october 2021 (TATOLI)- Timor-Leste Press Council (TLPC) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The United States (US) Embassy in Timor-Leste to combat disinformation/fake news in Timor-Leste.

The cooperation agreement was signed by the President of Press Council (PC) Virgilio Guterres ‘Lamukan’ and the United Nation Charge d’affairs, Tom Delay at the Office of the PC today.

“PC is committed to cooperating with the U.S Embassy in Timor Leste to combat “fake news”/disinformation that is accelerating and affecting the way individuals interpret daily developments, which is also driven by the citizens in any digital platform,” Virgilio Guterres told reporters at the PC’s Office Quintal Boot, Dili today.

Guterres said through this cooperation the U.S Embassy will provide the training to 250 students about the fact check information, saying the training will be expanded to another four municipalities such as Dili, Manufahi, Bacau, and Ermera: “The training subjects will be elaborated by the PC in the short term,” he said.

Guterres at the same time, extended his gratitude to the U. S Embassy for the support of financial to the PC.

“On this occasion on behalf of PC, I would like to thank the U.S Government through the U.S. Embassy in Timor Leste for the donation of US$ 10,000, We hope with the support we can work together to combat the disinformation in Timor Leste,”

In the same place, the representative of the U.S to Timor – Leste Charge d’ Affaires Tom Daley is delighted about the PC’s cooperation to strengthen the Social Communication sector, saying therefore the U.S Government through its Embassy wish to donate US$ 10,000 to PC in dealing with disinformation spreading in social media.

“U.S and Timor-Leste consistently face the disinformation in Social media therefore to combat this issue, We need to check the fact and verify the factual information to the public,” said Mr. Daley.

“The U.S wishes to distinguish the Social Communication sectors through the mutual respect by implementing Democracy and freedom of the press and continue to strengthen the unlimited friendship cooperation in Timor Leste,” he added
