DILI, 17 january, 2022 (TATOLI)—United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Timor-Leste Quality Inspection (TLQI) are provided one million USD to establish an inspection laboratory for local foods in Timor-Leste.

This year, TLQI has signed an agreement with UNIDO to implement a $1 million infrastructure quality system project in Timor-Leste (TL) with a duration of three or four years.

The chairman of TLQI, Rosito de Sousa Monteiro said, IQTL and UNIDO have signed an agreement on a survey activity to identify the proper area to build laboratories.

The laboratory will be used for inspection to identify the appropriateness of local products in Timor-Leste.

The amount of $1 million is also used for infrastructure quality system projects. It helps to establish a quality infrastructure that will ensure the quality of food laboratories in TL.

“So at this time we are still waiting for UNIDO, who will arrive in february or early march, to start a survey on the quality infrastructure,” Rosito told Tatoli at his office in Comoro, Dili on monday.

He explained that when the UNIDO’s team arrives the survey activity will begin. This project will be carried out for three years starting from 2022-2024.

The National Laboratory for Product Quality is very important to analyze all domestic products for national consumption.

The local product is composed of rice, corn, soybean, red bean, coffee, vegetables, fruits, and more.

“Before all products distributed to the supermarket must have the inspection process.  It is also before exporting to the international market.

Thus, TL does not have a laboratory for food inspection. It is required for the inspection system to identify the appropriateness of local foods.

TLQI has the competence to examine the food national standards in TL. The foods must be secure and healthy for the community to consume. It must be in line with international standards to guarantee export foods. He concluded.
