DÍLI, 21 april, 2022 (TATOLI) – Former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, congratulated the Nobel laureate Jose Ramos-Horta on his victory in the 2022 Timor-Leste Presidential Election on Tuesday.
The message of congratulation was revealed today by José Ramos Horta, at the candidate’s national headquarters, in Hudi-Laran, Dili.
In his statement, the newly elected Head of State said that several world leaders and individuals from Asia, Europe, and the United States of America also congratulated him.
“As soon as I had the confirmation of the temporary result, I received several messages of congratulations from friends and various leaders abroad, including the former Secretary-General of the UN,” said the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also congratulated Ramos Horta on his victory in the presidential election.
Horta informed that the Head of State of Portugal has confirmed his presence at the inauguration of the 20th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence, on 20 May, this year.
In addition, Horta also revealed several foreign ambassadors in Timor-Leste who had personally congratulated him and praised Timor-Leste’s democracy.
José Ramos-Horta was the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in the Guinea-Bissau Election in 2013, and the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste in 2007.
