CNE concludes final tabulation of ballots cast in presidential election

DILI, 24 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The National Election Commission (CNE) has concluded, today, the national verification and tabulation of the ballots cast in the 2022 Presidential Election.

The official result of the national verification of the null and claimed votes showed that with 640.967 (99.19%) valid votes counted, the Nobel prize winner José Ramos-Horta had 398.028 (62.1%) votes against his rival incumbent Francisco Guterres Lú Olo’s 242.939 (37.9%) votes.

The President of CNE, José Agostinho da Costa Belo said after the verification of the 5.048 null votes and 277 claimed or protested votes, Horta had another 883 valid votes and Lú Olo received another 499 valid votes.

According to STAE’s tabulation prior to the national verification conducted by CNE, Horta secured 397.145 votes (62.09%), against Lu Olo’s 242.440 (37.91%) votes.

“The national verification is concluded, and we have another 1.200 valid votes. Of these valid votes, Horta got another 800 votes and more than 400 valid votes were attributed to Lu Olo,” he said.

Electoral calendar for the Second Round Presidential Election

According to the calendar of the 2022 Presidential Election, CNE prepares the minutes of the provisional national result and displays them at its headquarters, with a copy to STAE and the media – April 25th, 2022 to April 27th, 2022.

Appeal to the Court of Appeal against the provisional national result – April 28th, 2022.

Court of Appeal decides on the appeals – April 29th, 2022.

CNE submits the minutes of results to the Court of Appeal, if there is no appeal – April 29th, 2022 (once the period for appealing has expired).

Court of Appeal examines the documentation sent by CNE, validates the results, proclaims the result, and announces the number of registered voters, number of voters, number of blank and null votes, and number of votes attributed to each candidate. April 30th, 2022 to May 2nd, 2022.

Publication of the Court of Appeal’s decision in the Official Gazette (Jornal da República) – May 2nd, 2022.

Ramos Horta would be sworn in as the fifth President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, on the Independence Restoration Day, on may 20, 2022.
