US offers US$420 million to implement two projects in Timor-Leste

DILI, 25 april 2022 (TATOLI) — The Government of the United States, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), provided financial support of US$420 million to develop two main compact projects, namely the Water Sanitation and Drainage (WSD), and Education Project.

Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães made the comments following a one-week negotiation with MCC in the US from 7 to 15 april.

“This negotiation produced a productive agreement between the two parties. This agreement will bring transformative investment to improve the health and education sector in Timor-Leste.”

These two projects are estimated to cost around US$484 million, of which US$ 420 million was made available by the MCC, together with a US$64 million contribution made available by the Government of Timor-Leste: This financial support is given to implement the two projects for the five years.

“The WSD project includes the disinfection of national waters, sewage, and drainage systems, the strengthening of institutions and regulatory bodies, and the creation of a solid supply of water and sewage for domestic use that complies with the most advanced engineering and procedures at an international level. Meanwhile, US$ 40 million of the US$420 million would be allocated for the education project, including the establishment of a New Center of Excellence for the training of new high school teachers to ensure quality and leadership standards,” he explained.

On april 7, the Minister of Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães led a high-level Government delegation to US for negotiations on the multi-million-dollar compact under the US government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
