DILI, 03 august 2022 (TATOLI) – The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), Acacio Guterres, informs that, the Government Ministry of MAF has placed US$5.5 million from the state’s annual budget to build a new fishing harbor in the Metinaro region.
“This new fishing port will construct in Metinaro in 2023, and will be integrated with an ice factory and Marketing Management office as well as other related fishing equipment,” Director, Acacio Guterres told TATOLI in his office, Comoro, Dili.
In addition, it will also feature a boat parking area, loading dock, and load fish supplies, several shipyard warehouses, packaging and shipping of fish, fish market to facilitate the customers to conduct the transaction.
He added all designs have been completed by MAF engineering and will open tenders for national and international companies: “We hope that with the fishing ports, MAF will have effective control over the movement of industrial fishing vessels and all fish will be managed by MAF in Metinaro before being sold,” he said.
According to Guterres, the Metianro Fishing Port is MAF’s priority to diversify the blue economy as an alternative to substitute the oil and gas resources and the continuation of economic growth in Timor – Leste.
“Since Timor-Leste’s independence until now, Timor-Leste has not had an integrated fishing port, therefore MAF came up with an alternative to build a fishing port in Metinaro, aiming to serve the local fishing community.
