DILI, 10 august 2022 (TATOLI)- The World Chess Federation awarded new titles to three chess athletes from Timor-Leste (TL) at the 2022 World Chess Olympics held in Chennai, India.
“In the last round, Athlete Elfiana dos Santos beat up her opponent. She offered victory for three Timorese athletes who won the title from FIDE,” wrote on the official website of the Timor-Leste Chess Federation, FXTL which was accessed by Tatoli, this Wednesday.
The three athletes consisted of Helder de Araújo as FIDE Master (FM) with 7.5 points, Athlete Sonizia Tilman da Silva as Women Candidate Master (WCM) with 5 points and Athlete Elfiana dos Santos holding Women Candidate Master (WCM) with 4 points.
With the three new titles mentioned, Timor-Leste currently has one Candidate Master’s degree (CM, Tito dos Reis), two WCM degrees, and one FM degree.
In the last Olympics, the team from Timor-Leste, mostly unable to get additional points, only Elfina dos Santos managed to beat her opponent Chika Pride from the Bahamas with 4 points.
Timor-Leste presented eight athletes consisting of the four-person Women’s Chess Team, Elfiana dos Santos, Maria do Ceu, Sonizia Tilman da Silva and Zulmira Americo Tilman. The Men’s Chess Team consists of Tito dos Reis, Helder de Araújo, Cosme Guterres and Marcos da Conceição
As the final result of the Olympics, the Timorese female Team ranks 116th, surpassing 46 countries out of a total of 162 participating countries. Meanwhile, the Timorese Male’s Team ranked 164th, surpassing 24 countries out of a total of 188 participating countries.
