PNTL lacks human resources for border control

DILI, 30 january 2023 (TATOLI) – The General Command of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), Commissioner Faustino da Costa acknowledged that the PNTL still lacks human resources to ensure Effective border security

“PNTL has deployed Special Police Unit (SPU) teams in border areas to support the work of the Border Patrol Unit (BPU),” Costa told TATOLI in Dili.

According to Commissioner Costa, the Maritime Police Unit was also asked to support the Dili Task Force team in responding to emergency situations.

In 2019, PNTL registered a total of 4,144 active members, 98 of whom left their careers for health reasons.

The Commissioner informed that the PNTL, last year, distributed one vehicle to each Municipal Command to enhance police operations.
