Parliament congratulates Timorese women and girls on International Women’s Day

DILI, 07 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the National Parliament Aniceto Guterres congratulates Timorese women and girls and women around the world on International Women’s Day.

“I sincerely congratulate Timorese women and girls and all women around the world who will celebrate on March 8, International Women’s Day,” Guterres conveyed his congratulations, in the House of Parliament, in Dili, today. 

He said that strong women make a strong world, saying therefore that gender equality is the key to effective development and the creation of a peaceful and stable world.

MP Helena Martins from the FRETILIN party also extended her congratulations to Timorese women and girls, stating that International Women’s Day is essential to promote a more gender-equal world, free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

At the same place, MP Maria Barreto, from the CNRT party, also highlighted the importance of International Women’s Day: “International Women’s Day is a special day for Timorese women and girls to fight and achieve gender equality in their families.”

She said that Timorese women need to be smart and strong in the fight against gender inequalities in Timor-Leste society. 

Every year, International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world, dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women and the pursuit of gender equality.

In 2022, the global gender gap index for Timor-Leste was 0.73 index. The global gender gap index of Timor-Leste increased from 0.69 indexes in 2012 to 0.73 index in 2022 growing at an average annual rate of 1.17%.
