CI – MAF sign the second  MoU  to conserve the marine riches in Timor – Leste

DILI, 04 april 2023 ( TATOLI)– Conservation International (CI) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) today signed a second Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conserve the marine riches in Timor – Leste.

The Country Director of CI, Manuel Mendes, said CI had worked together with MAF since 2019 to conserve the marine riches and marine protected area in Timor – Leste, therefore today CI and MAF wish to continue the cooperation by signing the second phase MoU to continue working together in conserving and protected marine area from 2023 to 2026. 

” We have conserved the riches of marine such as the species of coral reef, pygmy spinner dolphin, turtle and the protected marine area in Nino Konis Santana and Atauro,” the Country Director of CI, Manuel Mendes told TATOLI at the office of MAF, Comoro Dili on tuesday.

He added that the signing of the MoU, CI, and MAF will promote the transborder of natural resources and will give prosperity to the Timorese people.

In addition, approximately 15 protected marine areas with a total area of 1,3 million hectares are managed effectively to ensure the productivity of Fisheries to benefit 1 million Timorese people and also will develop the blue economy to support the long-term management including the migrant species fish in the Timor sea.

At the same place, the Minister of MAF Pedro dos Reis appreciates the CI’s initiative in conducting cooperation in conserving the riches of marine and protected marine areas in Konis Santana, Tutuala, Atauro, and Maliana, Vatugade.

“We have a lot of marine riches such as coral reef, whales, dolphins and the other marine riches in the protected marine area, and its need to conserve to attract the tourist to visit Timor – Leste in diversifying the resilient economic of Timor – Leste,” he concluded.
