DILI, may 10, 2023 (TATOLI)– Indonesian President Joko Widodo has pledged to support Timor-Leste in the establishment of an institution for the country’s accession to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The statement followed a meeting between Prime Ministers Taur Matan Ruak and Joko Widodo, held on the diversion of Timor-Leste’s arrival of the Head of Government in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara province, to attend the 42nd ASEAN Summit.
“Indonesia is committed to assisting Timor-Leste in its [ASEAN] accession plan, particularly in strengthening institutional capacity to prepare human resources before becoming a full member,” the Indonesian Head of State said in a statement from Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister’s Office today.
Widodo said his government was preparing a bilateral investment outline to promote Timor-Leste’s future economic development as a full member of the association.
Taur Matan Ruak took the opportunity to reaffirm his gratitude for the unconditional support of the Government of Indonesia regarding Timor-Leste’s accession to the regional organization, as well as strengthening institutional capacity.
