Ambassador Sarjit: prioritizing infrastructure and Human Resources will accelerate TL’s accession to ASEAN

DILI, 06 july 2023 (TATOLI)— Malaysian Ambassador to Timor – Leste, Amarjit Sarjit Singh, said prioritizing the infrastructure and Human Resources (HR) sectors will accelerate Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.

“These two important priorities need to be done by Timor-Leste, namely, basic infrastructure and human resources. These priorities are very important and must be accelerated to become a full member of ASEAN,” Ambassador Amarjit told TATOLI journalists at Timor Lodge Comoro, Dili, this Thursday.

Ambassador Amarjit explained that the basic infrastructure that needed to be accelerated was the condition of airports, seaports, telecommunications, hotels, and other related basic infrastructure in Timor-Leste.

Likewise, said Ambassador Amarjit, also emphasized that, human resource issues must be considered. So, it must complete capacity building for all government agencies through training in various fields such as training in leadership, finance, Customs, auditing, administrative management, information technology, and other related training.

“Malaysia believes that if Timor-Leste carries out these two important priorities then this country will be accepted to become a full member of ASEAN quickly and Malaysia is ready to support Timor-Leste,” he explained.

Meanwhile, previously ASEAN had recognized Timor-Leste as its 11th member. Timor-Leste’s status as an observer . This decision was conveyed through an official statement issued after the meeting of ASEAN leaders in Cambodia on Friday (11/11/2022).
