DILI, 18 september 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, met the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair, on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, President Horta asked the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, a non-profit organization set up by Tony Blair, to support Timor-Leste.

Horta requested Tony Blair to send some of his institute’s experts to support Timor-Leste on a number of important areas that are crucial for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN and WTO.

“The Head of Statte has asked the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change to send some of its experts to support the President’s office and the Government in a number of areas, including the development of human resources in areas that are crucial for the country’s accession to ASEAN and WTO,” said in a statement.

The organization is strongly influenced by Tony Blair’s ideology and personal style, but it is not a political party.

The institute was launched as a new policy platform to refill the wide open space in the middle of politics aimed at containing authoritarian populism around the globe as many authoritarians.
