DILI, 05 january 2024 (TATOLI) – According to data from the Central Bank of Timor-Leste, Timorese workers in Australia sent around US$79 million between 2012 and 2023 and those in South Korea transferred around US$43 million between 2009 and 2023.
According to the National Director of Foreign Employment (DNEE) of the Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SoSVTE), João Correia Pereira, the remittances have contributed to improving the family economy of each of the workers and, ultimately, have contributed to the country’s development.
Pereira added that working abroad is a great experience for the Timorese to continue developing their families and fighting poverty.
“Working abroad is a great opportunity for Timorese workers because they get a good salary as well as developing their career,” said Pereira.
SoSVTE have registered 13,295 workers in Australia and 5,868 in South Korea.
The program to send workers from Timor-Leste to South Korea was established in 2009 and to Australia in 2012.
