USAID launches new Avansa SAN to boost Food System and Nutrition in Timor-Leste

DILI, 19 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the launch of Avansa Sistema Ai-han no Nutrisaun (SAN), a new US$15 million, five-year initiative to advance Timor-Leste’s food system to enhance nutrition and bolster food security in the municipalities of Aileu, Ainaro, Dili, and Ermera.

Avansa SAN will support climate smart agriculture initiatives, promote crop diversification, strengthen agro-food small and medium-sized enterprises, raise community awareness on dietary diversity, and encourage the adoption of healthy practices to improve nutritional well-being.

Avansa SAN will also provide focused assistance to smallholder farmers and pregnant women with children under five, to increase the availability, access affordable, and consumption of healthy diets, especially for women and children.

“In launching the Avansa SAN activity, USAID is proud to support Timor-Leste’s development priorities. By enhancing food systems and nutrition, especially for women and children, we aim to build resilience and contribute to a healthier future. This initiative underscores our commitment to partnership and sustainability,’ USAID Interim Mission Director Mark White told reporters at the USAID office, in Dili, on friday.

Focused on improving nutritional status and food security, Avansa SAN will contribute to the nation’s development goals, in alignment with Timor-Leste’s national priorities. USAID is pleased to continue its collaboration with the government of Timor-Leste at the national and local levels to accelerate the strengthening of local food systems.
