DILI, 29 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste, through the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs (MCAE), in collaboration with the Agriculture Ministry and Institute for Business Development Support (IADE), has launched the 2024 Business Innovation Challenge Competition in the area of horticulture.

On behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, the Secretary of State for Forestry, Fernandinho Vieira, said that the launch of BICC 2024 aims to encourage talented young entrepreneurs to invest and run businesses in the horticulture sector.

Vieira called on talented young entrepreneurs who are currently developing business activities in the field of horticulture to apply for BICC 2024.

According to him, encouraging more young people to get involved in the horticulture business is crucial for the development of the horticulture sector in the country.

“The development of agriculture, especially horticulture, is important for the diversification of our economy,” said Vieira.

He said that the development of horticulture is key to increasing the production of carrots, cabbages, eggplants, and spinach, among others.

Meanwhile, IADE’s Executive Director, Filomeno Marcelino Belo, said that involving more young people in the production of horticultural crops will help the country achieve its goal of food self-sufficiency one day in the future.

Registration for BICC 2024 will begin on march 4th. Around US$60,000 has been allocated by the government for realization of the competition
