DILI, 05 july 2024 (TATOLI) – Rui Pereira dos Santos was sworn in by the House Speaker, Maria Fernanda Lay, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão, as Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (CAC), for a four-year term.
Speaking at the event, Gusmão asked the new Commissioner to prioritize the interests of the State to fight corruption in the country.
In response, Rui dos Santos pledged to take on the new role with responsibility, impartiality, and professionalism.
Santos pledged that he would ask for support from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of Appeal, and the Ministry of Justice so that CAC officials could be given training in the area of investigation.
Santos was a judge at the Court of First Instance in Dili between 2000 and 2005. Between 2010 and 2014 he was Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, and between 2016 and 2018 he was Deputy Commissioner of the CAC.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by the Minister of Justice, Sergio Hornai, the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Adérito Hugo, the Attorney General, Alfonso Lopez, and the leaders of the KHUNTO, CNRT and PD parties.
