DILI, 06 july 2024 (TATOLI) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MFAC), Bendito dos Santos Freitas, on friday, accompanied the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, to hold a bilateral meeting with the Head of State of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and Members of the Government, at the Presidential Palace.
During the meeting, Timor-Leste and Mozambique agreed to establish cooperation in three important areas through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Minister, Bendito Freitas and his Mozambican counterpart, Verónica Mocamo.
The memorandum of understanding focuses on three important areas such as the establishment of a permanent mechanism for diplomatic policy consultation, in the area of education, especially higher education, science, and technology, and finally on the exploration of oil and hydrocarbons.
The President of the Republic of Mozambique also asked Timor-Leste to share its experience with them on the management of sovereign funds or petroleum funds, because, in this extractive industry, Timor-Leste has advanced experience.
Other issues discussed were in the areas of health, agriculture, and human capital development including multilateral cooperation at the level of the United Nations and other multilateral bodies that Timor-Leste and Mozambique can help each other.
President Ramos-Horta also asked Mozambique, which is the fourth country in the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), as well as Portugal, Brazil, and Angola, including other CPLP member countries, to open an embassy in Timor-Leste, to further consolidate relations and cooperation between member states.
The meeting was attended by the Head of State, José Ramos-Horta, also accompanied by the Ambassador of Timor-Leste to Mozambique, Luís Miguel de Sousa Siqueira, and others.
