DILI, 18 september 2024 (TATOLI) – On tuesday, Licypriya Kangujam, a child environmental activist from India has arrived in Dili and was warmly welcomed by the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta.
This visit, scheduled from september 16 to 23, 2024, underscores the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment.
Licypriya Kangujam, at just 13 years old, has emerged as a powerful voice in the global climate movement. Since the age of six, she has been tirelessly advocating for climate action, speaking at international forums, and inspiring youth worldwide to engage in environmental activism.
During her visit, Kangujam will participate in a series of interactive sessions and presentations at various educational institutions across Timor-Leste, including CAFÉ School in Taibessi, CAFÉ School in Bécora, Timor-Leste’s Catholic University (UCT), Institute Professional of Canossa (IPDC) Dili Portuguese School (EPD) and the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL). These events aim to raise awareness about climate change and inspire young citizens to take action for a sustainable future.
In a gesture of goodwill, Kangujam will be distributing educational materials and sports equipment to local schools, including five laptops and five projectors for smart classroom upgrades, 50 high-quality school bags, 100 footballs, 20 pairs of football shoes, and 20 kick pads, and 120 school stationery combo sets.
President Ramos-Horta said, “We are delighted to welcome Licypriya Kangujam to Timor-Leste. Her dedication to climate advocacy at such a young age is truly inspiring.”
“We hope her visit will motivate our youth to become active participants in addressing the global climate crisis and building a sustainable future. Together, we can work towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Timor-Leste,” Horta concluded.
