DILI, 21 March 2025 (TATOLI) – Last year, Timorese migrant workers in Australia, South Korea, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Japan sent more than US$244.8 million in remittances to the country, said BCTL’s Governor, Hélder Lopes at the launch of the Timor-Leste Economic Performance 2024, at the Ministry of Finance, in Dili, today.
Lopes said that of the US$244.8 million, US$100 million came from Timorese workers in the UK, US$61 million from Australia, US$44.8 million from South Korea, and US$39 million from other countries.
He stated that most of Timor-Leste’s non-oil revenues in 2024 came from remittances sent by Timorese workers abroad.
Lopes recalled that Timor-Leste’s inward remittances from foreign countries in 2023 were US$204.4 million, a slight increase from US$196 million in 2022.
In addition to the remittances from Timorese workers, the government of Timor-Leste, in 2024, was committed to boosting other non-oil domestic revenues through economic diversification, BCTL Report said.
