Tour de Timor and Dili International Marathon scheduled for August 2026

The President of Timor-Leste's National Sports Federation (CDTL), Afranio Xavier Amaral

DILI, 06 November 2025 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic José Ramos-Horta has called on the Timor-Leste Cycling Federation (FSTL) and the Timor-Leste Athletics Federation (FATL) to begin preparations for two major international events: the revival of the Tour de Timor, starting from Indonesia, and the Dili International Marathon, both slated for August 2026.

Afrânio Xavier Amaral, President of FATL, confirmed that the Head of State issued a clear directive urging both federations to begin maximum preparations for the two events.

“We received an official invitation from the President during our meeting, where he asked us to begin drafting a program with fixed, non-negotiable dates. These events are scheduled to take place during the second week of August 2026, right here in Timor-Leste,” Afrânio told journalists at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace in Bairro Pite.

He added that both events will be organized in collaboration with ASEAN national federations and global athletic organizations.

“The Dili Marathon will be recognized as an international event on the global calendar, similar to other major activities around the world. We will work closely with ASEAN and international federations to coordinate efforts,” he said.

Afrânio emphasized that participation will be open to all, with no registration limits, welcoming both local and international athletes.

Cycling Federation President Herculano dos Santos stated that preparations are underway to relaunch the Tour de Timor, following the President’s request to revive the event after a long suspension.

“The President has reiterated the need to prepare for the Tour de Timor. We must coordinate with Indonesia to determine the route,” he said.

According to the plan, the Tour de Timor will begin in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, and continue into Timor-Leste. A dedicated commission will work intensively with Indonesian counterparts to secure the necessary authorizations.
