DILI, 2 june 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste today received over 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Australia.

The Executive Director of the Autonomous Service of Medicines and Health Equipment, Santana Martins, stated that the doses arrived today and are stored at SAMES.

To keep the vaccine safe, Mr. Martins said they have to act fast and ask the staff to be prepared at the airport with refrigerated transportation as well as at SAMES for unloading the goods into the cold room.

“For our cold chain system control, we must ensure our refrigerators meet the mandatory requirements – with a temperature range from +2 to +8 degrees Celsius. My team must also inspect the vaccines, verify the temperature and report this information to Canberra as part of our regulatory processes.” Mr. Martins said in a statement posted from Australian Embassy in Dili.

Mr. Martins acknowledges the collaborative effort involved in the vaccination rollout saying “I am proud of the cooperation among international agencies and foreign governments who are helping us with the vaccines. They are also providing the consumables that are used alongside the vaccines too. For example, 20,000 vaccine doses require 20,000 syringes.” He said.

Santana Martins said that the batch of vaccines will be managed by the General Directorate of the Ministry of Health.

The statement released on the official website of the Australian Embassy and social networks states that since the vaccine rollout started in April, there are 94,000 AstraZeneca vaccines have processed – 24,000 doses supplied by COVAX and 70,000 from Australia.

This vaccine will be administered in the capital, where there is a greater number of people infected with covid-19.
