DILI, 09 september 2021 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament (PN) of Timor-Leste strengthened bilateral relationship with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on parliamentary diplomacy to promote peace, democracy, and sustainable development.
“I have invited the President of Inter-Parliamentary Union to visit Timor-Leste in the future. As a member of IPU, Timor-Leste would boost a good relation with IPU on parliamentary diplomacy,” Guterres made the comments during his meeting with the President of IPU, Duarte Pacheco, in Vienna, the capital and largest city of Austria.
“Guterres was delighted and thanked the President of IPU for meeting and sharing with the Parliamentary Delegation of Timor-Leste in Vienna,” said in a statement.
During the meeting, Guterres shared with IPU’s President regarding Timor-Leste’s commitment to joining efforts with the international community on the battle against Covid-19.
Pacheco thanked the Parliamentary Delegation of Timor-Leste for participating in the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
He said on march 20, 2022, Bali, Indonesia, will host IPU General Assembly.
Pacheco wanted Timor-Leste to nominate its candidate for membership of the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians.
He called on Timor-Leste to be prepared well to host the next CPLP Summit on march 2022, saying he will attend the summit himself.
‘Parliamentary diplomacy’ concerns the full range of international activities undertaken by parliamentarians to increase mutual understanding between countries, to assist each other in improving the control of governments and the representation of a people, and to increase the democratic legitimacy of intergovernmental institutions, said in IPU’s website.
