316 Timorese sent to work in Australia in the first quarter of 2022

DILI, 05 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE) had sent 316 workers to Australia in the past three months.

“From january to march this year, we have sent 316 workers to Australia under the Seasonal Worker Program (SWP), and Pacific Labor Facility (PLF). Of the 316 workers, 85 were women and the rest were male workers,” Filomeno Soares, the Director of the National Directorate of Foreign Employment (DNEE) of SEFOPE told TATOLI at his office, in Becora, Dili, on monday.

He said 1.420 Timorese workers are currently working in Australia, saying more than 300 workers have abandoned their work visas and working under protection visas.

“This year, 60 Timorese workers have returned home. Today, we have another 451 Timorese workers attend this pre-departure briefing, of which 154 are women,” he said.

SEFOPE would send another 22 workers to Australia between april 6 and 11 under the Seasonal Worker Program.

“Of these 22 workers, three male workers would be departing for Australia on april 6 to work for Top of the Crop. In addition, another nine workers made up of five men and four women will be flying on april 8 to work for Connect Group/AAA. While another 10 workers will be departing for Australia on april 11 to work for Ceres Farm company.
