DILI, 08 april 2022 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste awaits a roadmap and timetable for joining the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Director General of ASEAN Affairs, Milena Rangel, explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) is guarding the official high-level decision of the organization’s member states.
“We hope that ASEAN Summit of 2022, in Cambodia will make a decision on the process of an association of Timor–Leste to disclose,” Milena Rangel told TATOLI, at the MoFAC, Praia dos Coqueiros, Dili.
The MoFAC acknowledged that the pandemic hampered ASEAN’s fact-finding mission to finalize the socio-cultural and economic assessment of the country, more direct than the current President, Hun Sen, remains committed to accelerating the process.
It is recalled that in the virtual meeting, which took place on 14 february, between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Cambodia, Prak Sokhonn and the Secretary General of ASEAN, Lim Jock Hoi, announced that the organization was making every effort to accelerate the country’s accession to the block.
Milena Rangel, also informed that next week a team from Indonesia will visit Timor-Leste. It is worth remembering that next year the rotating President of ASEAN will be held by Indonesia.
