Five Timorese athletes to participate in World Karate Championship in Indonesia
DILI, 11 november 2022 (TATOLI) – Five Timorese athletes will compete in the Karate World Championship to be held next week in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The President of the Timor-Leste Karate Federation (FKTL), Filomeno Soares said that it’s important for the Timorese athletes to participate in the international competition, organized by the World Karate Federation.
“Our participation is essential as it is a good opportunity for us to prepare to compete in SEA GAMES which will take place next year in Cambodia,” Soares told Tatoli in Dili.
Soares said that the FKTL had no financial support from the State Secretariat for Youth and Sport (SEJD), despite the fact that the federation had requested financial support of US$8,000 to support the athletes during the competition in Indonesia.
“So, athletes’ participation in the competition would be funded by FKTL, families, and sponsors,” he said.
Jacob Manuel will compete in 75 kg, Lúcia Fernandes in 68 kg, Luchas da Silva Keffie and Dionísio Fernandes in 60 and 67 kg, respectively. Meanwhile, Romana dos Santos will represent Timor-Leste to compete in jiu-jitsu.
The athletes will leave for Indonesia on November 15, and the competition will take place between 18 and 20 november.
