DILI, 14 April 2024 (TATOLI) – The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) has allocated more than US$240,000 for the production of 200,000 biometric voter cards, according to the Director-General of the institution, Elviro Moniz.
He said that the budget would be used for the purchase of biometric cards and 632 printing machines. ‘We ran out of biometric cards in March, so the money is allotted to buy 200,000 cards,’ Moniz told Tatoli in Caicoli, Dili.”
The National Director of Technology and Information at STAE, Tulia de Andrade, said that a total of 136,546 cards have been produced since the biometric system was introduced in July 2024.
More than 35,000 cards were issued in Dili, over 9,000 in Aileu and Manatuto, 5,000 in Manufahi, 6,000 in Viqueque, and more than 7,000 in Ermera, Covalima, Lautém, and Liquiçá,” she explained.
Biometric voter cards use unique biometric features, such as fingerprints or facial scans, to ensure accurate voter identification.
