NEW YORK, 22 september 2024 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MFAC), Bendito dos Santos Freitas and the Representative of the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the United Nations, Ambassador Dionisio Babo Soares accompanied the Prime Minister, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, holding a bilateral meeting with the President of Estonia, Alar Karis addressing future cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting took place in a harmonious environment, as it was the first meeting between the two leaders, discussing the conditions of the country’s development, including sharing the history of the struggle for independence.
During the meeting, Gusmão and Karis also discussed the plan for future economic development and other potential cooperation, as Estonia has a lot of experience in Electronic Government and digital infrastructure, for this could offer valuable knowledge to Timor-Leste, allowing economic diversification in the oil and gas sector.
President Karis also invited the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta to participate in an international event that will take place in Estonia on the 19th to 20th of october 2024.
At the meeting, the two leaders addressed the issue of human rights and Estonia asked for Timor-Leste’s support for Estonia’s candidacy as a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
This issue is in line with Timor-Leste’s commitment, expressed in its participation in international organizations, such as the UN, ASEAN and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
Estonia, one of the developed countries in the European zone, has already obtained its independence since 1918, but for political-ideological reasons, it was under the rule of the Soviet Union for many years and ended up restoring its independence on august 20, 1991 with the total population of 1,331,796 inhabitants.
