DILI, 26 february 2022 (TATOLI) – Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), through the Chief Representative, GOTO Ko, handed over 13 Units of Strong Motion Accelerator and four units of Broadband Seismometer to the President of the Institute of Petroleum and Geology (IPG), Gabriel Aparicio, for Timor-Leste Seismic Network Upgrading and Micro-Tremor Study

The equipment was handed over to IPG, following an official request made by IPG under the Follow Up Cooperation on Knowledge CO-Creation Program.

The handover ceremony took place at IPG’s office in Dili, on yesterday

The 13 Units of Strong Motion Accelerator and four units of Broadband Seismometer are crucial for IPG in identifying any sign of earthquake, tsunami, and other hazards beforehand. The equipment is estimated to cost approximately US$140.000.

“The provision of the equipment aimed to support the activities of IPG in identifying and mapping the most disaster-prone areas in Timor-Leste, particularly in capital Dili, in order to raise the awareness of the communities to minimize the risk and damages caused by natural disasters in the future,” JICA’s Chief Representative, GOTO Ko said in a statement released today.

Furthermore, JICA would contract a consultant team to carry out training for the staff members of IPG on software operation and management. Thus, IPG’s staff members will definitely use the opportunity to learn along with the consultant team in order to independently and continuously operate the equipment in the future.

The Knowledge CO-Creation Program or JICA’s training course is an annual program for capacity building that is held every year in Japan for the officials from the government institutions, local NGOs, and academic institutions.

There are five JICA’s alumni members of IPG, who have jointly collaborated with JICA to realize the project with the financial support from JICA.

JICA is committed to support those who have participated in JICA’s programs.
