Timorese Students Stand Against Gender-Based Violence through U.S.-Funded Program

DILI, 26 march 2022 (TATOLI)–Over 150 Timorese high school students attended the “I’Qual for All” National Conference on Gender-Based Violence, a program funded by the U.S. Department of State.

I’Qual for All – meaning “I am equal with others” is an educational campaign led by alumni of the Fulbright and Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) program to empower Timorese students to become advocates in speaking out against gender-based violence.

“This work is critically important because it is only when women and girls are able to live free from the fear of abuse and violence that they will be able to unleash their full talents,” said U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Tom Daley in opening remarks at the event, on an official statement released today.

“Unleashing the talents of all of our citizens is absolutely essential to ensuring that we can all meet the challenges that we will face in the future – economic development, education, public health, climate change, and many more. The United States is absolutely committed to ending gender-based violence globally, and we are proud to support this program.”

Through the program, I’Qual for All delivered virtual workshops to high school students throughout Timor-Leste to raise awareness about gender-based violence and equip students with the knowledge and tools to stand up and speak out against violence.

The campaign also encouraged young leaders to become advocates through writing competition and public advocacy, including through leading youth organizations including UmaAmerika@UNTL and the Timor-Leste Youth Initiative for Development. I’Qual for All was implemented thanks to the close collaboration with the Secretary of State for Equality and Social Inclusion, Fundasaun Codiva, NGO AJAR, PNTL_VPU, Plan International, Uma Amerika, INpaktu Youth, and Timorese Youth Initiative for Development.
